As part of our Christmas cocktails feature we have received all kinds of recipes, but the Al Rojo Vivo is a little bit special as it was created by SocialandCoktail to celebrate the life and times of legendary Golfer Seve Ballesteros.
Twice winner of the Masters Tournament, Ballesteros was a legend in the game right from the beginning of his career but sadly passed away in 2011.
To enable fans to raise a glass with style, SocialandCoktail were tasked to create a drink which contained Seve’s favourite Rioja mixed with various Spanish ingredients, including Pedro Ximenez sherry from Jerez, Apple Brandy from his native Cantabria, Seville Orange Marmalade and Dr Adam Elmegirab’s Spanish Bitters.
This combination creates a mixture of fire, fruit and bitterness and with the addition of marmalade the drink has texture and balance.
Based on the recipe for a typical Spanish Sangria cocktail, even the garnish has relevance – reflecting key Spanish exports in addition to paying tribute to Seve’s flair, skill and exuberance.
Now you have seen it and heard about it, its time to try an Al Rojo Vivo for youself.
Ingredients:
150ml Rioja Crianza
15ml PX Sherry
15ml Apple Brandy or Calvados
2 bar spoons Seville Orange Marmalade
3 dashes Spanish Bitters
Method:
Shake well over cubed ice and strain into red wine goblet. Fill with cubed and then crushed ice and garnish lavishly with orange, red apple and mint.
