Starbucks in North America has introduced the $1 reusable cup to help slow down and potentially eliminate the waste caused through people throwing away and not recycling their Starbucks cup.
The reusable cup, which looks very much like a regular Starbucks cup, was launched on the 4th January and will entitle the bearer to a discount on drinks purchased at Starbucks.
This scheme is said to encourage reuse of the cup, which will pay for itself after 10 uses.
Customers who might be worried about hygiene issues caused by taking their cup with them need not be, as Starbucks will clean the cup in-store with a boiling water rinse.
The new Starbucks reusable cup is already available in 600 Pacific Northwest Starbucks outlets and has seen a positive change in users habits in a short space of time – chains estimating an increase of around 26% in people using the reusable cups.
